“One person gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty. A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed” (Proverbs 11:24-25 NIV).
In the verse above, it describes the character that is gained by a person who practices giving. We are to give from the heart. We are able to apply this today by going the extra mile for someone else. It is the same idea as a “baker’s dozen.
The meaning of a “baker’s dozen” is 13; a dozen plus one. To safeguard against penalties for short measure, the former bakers would add an extra loaf of bread to a batch of 12 loaves. This was to make sure they were not short the requested amount. Bakers today are still choosing to do this. Many people think that they accidentally received an extra; however, by the baker adding an extra he is going the extra mile to give one more.
We are to be devoted to God’s desires rather than our own and carry his love and mercy into the World.
Why do we go the extra mile? It is a response to God’s love. We gain a right perspective that our love was given to us by God to be used to help others. We receive the joy by giving and we receive God’s approval.
Our Heavenly Father, thank you for giving your love to us unconditionally. Thank you for going the extra mile time and time again. Forgive us for not giving as you give to us. Thank you for the gifts of time, energy and possessions. We ask that we be devoted to your desires rather than our own. We need to be the refresher for someone who needs to be refreshed. In Jesus name. Amen.
